The Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń moved up in the prestigious Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), the oldest world ranking of universities, called the Shanghai ranking. In the ranking of universities from around the globe, the NCU holds the third place in Poland in the academic discipline of mathematics.

The NCU is ranked in the third hundred (at position 201-300) of this year's Shanghai's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) in the field of natural sciences in the academic subject: Mathematics, as compared to last year’s 301-400 position and the 5th place in Poland.

In the ranking of the 500 best centers conducting such studies in the world, only 7 Polish universities are listed. Apart from the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, there are: Warsaw University (in the range of 51-75); Jagiellonian University (in the range of 151-200); AGH University of Science and Technology and Warsaw University of Technology (in the range 301-400) and the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań and Wrocław University of Technology (in the range of 401-500).

The ranking takes into account the publication activity of researchers in their given field.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities is one of the three most highly valued and widely commented rankings of higher education schools in the world (alongside the QS World University Rankings and Times Higher Education World University Rankings). It is prepared by the Institute of Higher Education at Jiao Tong University in Shanghai (hence, often referred to as the Shanghai ranking). The report is based upon the academic and research achievements of higher education schools. The creators of the AWRU ranking take into account, among others: international scientific achievements, the number of alumni and employees who have been awarded the Nobel Prize or the Fields Medal, the number of most cited researchers, the number of publications in the prestigious journals, such as "Nature" and "Science", and the number of publications listed in the selected citation indexes (Science Citation Index - Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index), etc. More about the methodology

Harvard University opens the 2018 Shanghai ranking. The AWRU was published on July, 17th 2018.
